the main menu

The main menu displays information about the current settings of the game:

The following buttons are available in the main menu:

the game screen

The game screen shows the court, the two players and the scoreboard.

The scoreboard is read he following way: The upper row represents your score, the lower line the opponent's score. The dots on the left show which player is currently serving, and if it is the first (one dot) or the second (two dots) service.

the game controls

Buttons: The Palms hardkeys are used to control the game. The default assignment is as follows:

Movement: Press the left, right, up and down buttons to move your player around the court.

Hitting: To strike the ball, either press the hit button (for a hard hit) or the lob button (for a slow and high ball). Note that the player lifts his racket when you PRESS the hit (or lob) button, and strikes at the moment you RELEASE the button. The longer the button has been pressed before hitting the ball, the harder the hit will be.

Aiming: To aim the ball, press a direction button while holding down the hit (or lob) button. Pressing left while hitting will for example aim the ball to the left side of the court, Pressing down will lead to a short ball.

Serving: Serving works the same way as hitting during the game: PRESS the hit button to lift the racket and RELEASE to hit the ball. The lob button is used to make a softer service that is easier to be placed inside the bounds (and therefore recommended for second service).

Quit: The quit button is used to exit Grand Slam!. Whenever the program is started again, the game is resumed. To actually end a game in progress, switch into Pause-mode and select "Quit".

Pause: Pressing one of the pause-buttons switches the game into pause mode. Once the game is paused, you have the option to either continue the game or quit it - this will bring you back to the main menu.

the options menu

player name: The default value for this field is your HotSync user name. You may change it if you like.

game mode: You may choose between EXHIBITION and TOURNAMENT mode. Exhibition enables you to play against any opponent you like, a tournament consists of five rounds against randomly chosen opponents (depending on the difficulty level of the tournament).

opponent (below game mode): In exhibition mode you may choose between 99 different opponents. The bracketed number represents the current rank of the opponent. The lower the number, the better he (usually) plays. In tournament mode you may select between six different tournaments.

court: You have the choice between CLAY, HARD and GRASS court surface. The different court types differ visually and effect how high the ball jumps after hitting the ground (hardcourt is the most elastic surface, clay court the least)

sets: The options are SINGLE SET (the game ends after the first set), BEST OF 3 (the player that first wins 2 sets wins) or BEST OF 5 (three sets have to be won by one player).

control: BUTTONS is the default option, if you choose BUTTONS & PEN, the player is moved by tapping on the screen, aiming the ball is done by tapping while holding down the hit button (to aim left, tap left of your player, for a short ball tap behind your player etc.)

define-button: This option allows you to redefine the buttons used to control the player.

game speed: Choose between SLOW, NORMAL or FAST game speed.

import-button: Use this option to import different names for the opponents. See the "importing player names"-chapter for details.

the statistics page

The statistics page helps you keeping track of your progress in the game. The trophy display has room for the cups you might win in the tournaments. The other values hold information about your current and top position in the rankings, how many matches you were victorious, service percentages etc.

The rating results from your overall performance so far and ranges from 6 (Beginner) to 1 (All-Star).

You may also check the current rankings by pressing the "ranking" button.

importing player names

In order to be able to replace the opponents' names you have to create a note using the "Memo Pad" application of your Palm device. Create one line for each player you want to rename.

After doing so, start Grand Slam! and press the "Import"-button in the options menu, select the note and press the "OK"-button.

The player names are replaced beginning with the top position in the rankings: #1 is replaced with the first name in your memo, #2 with the second, etc.

The changes are shown in a preview screen and you may decide if you want to keep the changes or leave the rankings unchanged.

appendix: the rules of tennis

the service: The ball served has to pass over the net and land on the ground within the service court which is diagonally opposite the player's position. If the ball fails to land within the service court, the service is a fault. If the ball touches the net but lands correctly, the service has to be repeated.

The serving player has two attempts to deliver a valid service. If the second service fails too, the opponent scores.

In Grand Slam!, service faults are signalled with a popup text reading "FAULT". If a service touched the net, the text "NET" is shown.

the ball in play: The valid area for the ball to land when in play is the area in the opposite half of the court delimited by the inner sidelines, the net and the ground line. The ball may be hit before or after it hit the ground for the first time (the service may only be returned after the ball hit the ground).

The player loses the point if:

score in a game: If a player wins his first point, the score is called 15 for that player. On winning his second point, the score is called 30, on winning the third point, the score is called 40, and the fourth point won by a player is scored a game for that player except:
  • If both players have won three points, the score is called deuce (40:40). The next point won by a player is scored advantage for that player.
  • If the same player wins the next point, he wins the game. If the other player wins the next point, the score is again called deuce.
score in a set: The player who first wins six games wins a set, except that he must win by a margin of two games over his opponent and if necessary the set is extended until this margin is achieved.

tie-break: In Grand Slam!, the score of 6:6 games always leads to a tie-break: Every point a player scores counts one point and the first player to win seven points wins the game and the set provided he leads by a margin of two points. If necessary the game is extended until this margin is achieved.

winning the match: According to the settings made in the options menu the first player who wins 1, 2 (default) or 3 sets wins the match.
