 Mobile Portfolio Tracker Overview
Mobile Portfolio Tracker allows Palm users to maintain and track multiple portfolios of stocks, bonds, and mutual funds. Users can enter the stock symbol, description, share purchase price, number of shares purchased, commission, and the total cost basis of a stock purchase.  Each stock can be "categorized" into separate portfolios in order to track the totals for an entire portfolio. Stock prices, daily low/high, volume, and last trade time are updated automatically during hotsync though the Internet connection on the PC. Optionally, you can get updates via a modem connected to the Internet.

System Requirements
To run Mobile Portfolio Tracker, you need
 - A Palm Professional, III, IIIx, V, or VII or compatible such as the Qualcomm pdQ.
 - A PC running Windows 95, 98, or NT to install the software and HotSync 3.0. If you need Hotsync v3.0_ you can download it for free from http://www.palm.com/custsupp/downloads
 - A TCP/IP connection on the PC is required to get price updates via HotSync. 250K of available disk space is required.
 - A TCP/IP connection for the Palm to get direct price updates. This can be a modem, a wireless modem, or a cable connection via a PC.

Installation
    1. Unzip the file portfoliotracker.zip in a directory that you will remember in the future. We recommend the c:\palm\portfoliotracker directory but it not required. You will need to remember where you installed it so you can use the "MPTUninstall.exe" file to uninstall the MPT conduit if you ever discontiue use of MPT.
    2. Review the readme and license files for any last minute news.
    3. Run the install program (MPTInstall.exe) by double-clicking on it in Windows Explorer
    4. A dialog will appear. Select your user name from the list provided (usually, you will be the only name in the list). Press "OK".
    5. You will be asked if you wish to update prices from your PC’s Internet connection when you HotSync. If you answer "Yes", you will then be asked if your PC uses a proxy or an authentication server to connect to the Internet. Generally, most users will not need to enter any information here. See the section on Proxy Configuration & Authentication Server below for details.
    6. You will then be asked if you wish to restart HotSync. Press "Yes". If you press "No", the Mobile Portfolio Tracker conduit will not be available until the next time you restart HotSync.
    7. A message will appear when things complete successfully.
    8. HotSync your Palm to install the Mobile Portfolio application.
    9. Startup Portfolio Manager on your palm and create a test stock position
    10. Hotsync again to ensure that the stock price is updated during hotsync

If you try view the details of this index, you'll only see the Day Watch tab since there is no position in an index. Likewise, when you edit the index, all you can change is the category (portfolio) in which is exists.

Preferences
You can reach this screen from the Options-Preferences menu item on the main screen. It is only necessary if you reach the Internet through a proxy server. Usually, proxy servers are only found in corporate nets. If you are not sure, contact your systems administrator. If you don’t have a systems administrator, you probably don’t have a proxy server.

The preferences screen is reached from the main menu, Options-Preferences. It used to set an Internet proxy if one is required. Most users will be able to ignore this. Some users, especially in corporate networks, will need to work through a proxy. Contact your systems administrator for the values to put in this screen.

Check "Use Proxy" and two additional fields will appear. The proxy host specifies the TCP/IP address of the proxy server. It is usually in the form of four numbers between 0 and 255 separated by periods. It may be in the form of a name (e.g. gateway.yourcompany.com). The proxy port is another magic number that tells how to connect to the proxy host. It normally is a number between 0-32678, with 80 commonly used. Press the OK button to have the changes accepted and return to the main screen. Press Cancel to return directly to the main screen without changes.

For more information on configuring your Proxy, see the Proxy section of this document

Updates with a Modem
The update menu includes options to update all securities in the portfolio using a modem connected to your Palm.  Portfolio Tracker needs an Internet connection to get receive the updates through the modem. You'll need to set this up through the Palm’s Preferences application, using either the "Network", or "Modem" preferences.  The details depend on the modem and Internet Service Provider (ISP) you are using. Refer the Palm or Modem documentation for more information.

In order to help estimate any wireless transmission charges you may incur, each update request will send about 100 bytes plus five or six bytes per security. It will receive about 100 bytes plus 50 to 60 bytes per security.

Updates through Hotsync and your PC Internet Connection
Mobile Portfolio Tracker has a HotSync conduit that will back up your portfolio to your PC and update prices using your PC’s Internet connection. The installation process will configure the HotSync conduit. Normally, you should not have to change it. Should you have to change the settings, follow the directions below.

Configuring Hot Sync
To configure the conduit, move the mouse cursor over the HotSync icon (a circle with blue and red arrows) in the tray at the lower right side of the PC screen. Click right and select "Custom" from the menu that appears. You will get a screen that allows you to select a conduit to configure. Select "Portfolio Tracker" from the list and press "Change". Note: if Portfolio tracker does not appear in the list, it might be that you are using Desktop 2.0. Mobile Portfolio Tracker needs Desktop 3.0, which can be downloaded at no charge from: http://www.palm.com/custsupp/downloads.

The screen for configuring the Portfolio Tracker conduit will appear. It allows you to specify what to do on a HotSync, including backup action and update action. If you select "Do Nothing", the conduit will do nothing, no backup, restore, or update.

Backup Action
The backup action allows you to backup your portfolio to the PC or restore a previously backed up portfolio to the handheld. Usually, you’ll want to back up the portfolio to the desktop, so select the "Handheld overwrites desktop" option and check "Set as default" to make this the normal action. If you lose the portfolio on the handheld, check "Desktop overwrites handheld" and do not check "Set as default". On the next HotSync, the conduit will restore the portfolio, then return to the normal action of backing up the portfolio.

Update Action
If your PC has an Internet connection, it can update the prices in your portfolio on every HotSync. To enable this, select the "Update prices from net" and "Set as default". The conduit will now update your portfolio on every HotSync.

If you do not plan on having Internet connectivity when you hotsync, you can set the default to not check the prices on the Internet by unselecting the "Update Prices from net" and then select the "Default" check box. However, you'll need to change the "Update from the net" check box when you do have connectivity and want Portfolio Tracker to update the prices.

You can keep the default set to update the prices even when you do not have Internet connectivity. Portfolio Tracker will simply try to make the Internet connection, then time-out and send an error message to your hotsync log. However, your other applications will hotsync normally with no problems.

Backing up and Restoring MPT data
Each time you hotsync two databases are backed up to the PC, generally in your c:\palm\<shortusername>\backup directory. These are MobilePTdb.pdb and Trading_Unleashed_Securities.pdb. If you ever need to restore your MPT data due to a hard reset or other data loss, you will need to install BOTH of these databases along with the MPT application.

Proxy and Authenication Server Configuration
If your desktop uses a proxy server to access the Internet, (normally only PC’s on corporate networks) you should check "Use Proxy" and specify the host address and socket. This needs to be done on both the PC installation of the conduit and the Palm software. These will be the same as used by your PC’s Web browser such as Netscape or Microsoft Explorer.

Netscape
In Netscape, select the Edit-Preferences menu item, then click on the Advanced category and Proxies within that category. If the manual proxy configuration option is checked, press "View". Copy the address and port from the HTTP line to the conduit screen.
 - Address from the Netscape screen to the Proxy Address field on the conduit screen
 - Port from the Netscape screen to the to Proxy Port field on the conduit screen.

Microsoft Internet Explorer
In the Microsoft Internet Explorer, select the View-Internet Options menu item, then the connection tab. The Proxy Server box will have the address and port. Copy these to the conduit screen.
 - Address from the Explorer screen to the Proxy Address field on the conduit screen.
 -
Port from the Explorer screen to the to Proxy Port field on the conduit screen.

Authenication Server
If your network requires an authentication server to access the network (normally only PC’s on corporate networks) then you need to enter the appropriate authentication login ID and password when when installing the MPT conduit. If you do not know your autentication server login ID and password, contact your network administrator.

Troubleshooting

For the latest information and problem descriptions, see the Mobile Portfolio Tracker FAQ at www.mobilegeneration.com/custsupp.

There are two major classes of problems on the handheld: application problems and update problems. Application problems occur within the handheld and show up as a dialog with an error message. Update problems occur while trying to update prices over the net.

Application Problems

When Portfolio Tracker encounters a problem, it will present a dialog with a brief error message. Additional information can be obtained by clicking the info icon in the upper right corner of the message dialog.

The Symbol Name field is required. When adding or editing a stock, the symbol field must be filled in.

The ROM version on this Palm doesn't support this application. Mobile Portfolio Tracker is not going to run on this Palm. It needs a Palm Professional or later.

The proxy host and port fields cannot be blank if a proxy is to be used. This error comes from the preferences screen when "Use Proxy" is checked, but either the proxy host name or port fields are blank. Return to preferences and either uncheck "Use Proxy" or supply the missing data.

The stock price is not being updated during hotsync. Please check your PC hotsync log for details. To view your hotsync dialog, right-click over the hotsync icon at the bottom right of the screen and select "View Log".

Update Problems

Problems updating stock prices can produce the following errors. The problems will be displayed in your hotsync dialog. To view your hotsync dialog, right-click over the hotsync icon at the bottom right of the screen and select "View Log".

Symbol not found. The exchange symbol for the security was not known to the quote server. Look up the correct symbol at http://finance.yahoo.com/, edit the security, and try again.

Server error. There was some problem with the quote server. This is most likely temporary and it may go away in a little while. If you are using a proxy server, there may be a problem with either the server or the setup. Check with your systems administrator.

Connection error. Portfolio Tracker was not able to connect to the quote server. This could be a transient network or server problem. If you are using a wireless connection, you might be outside coverage. It could also be a problem with the setup of the network or modem preferences on the handheld.

Data error. There was a problem with the data coming back from the server. If this persists, contact MGS support at support@mobilegeneration.com

Net Library Error. There was a problem with opening the network library on the handheld. Check the network preferences on the handheld.

Not Downloaded. This indicates that a quote has not been downloaded for the security. Select the security and Update-Selected from the main menu.

Look up error for host. We were unable to find the proxy host or quote server. If you are using a proxy server, it indicates the proxy host name is incorrect. It may also be a transient problem or a problem with the network preferences on the handheld (particularly the DNS server in the Advanced options).

Conduit does not run and does not appear in the "Customize" list. Check the version of the Palm Desktop running ("About" in the menu obtained by clicking right on the HotSync icon in the system tray). Portfolio Tracker requires version 3.0, which can be downloaded for free from http://www.palm.com/custsupp/downloads
